FAQs

What are tonics & syrups?

Syrups: These are herbs in combination whose properties are extracted out and preserved in a combination of alkaline water and organic honey. They have a shelf life of approximately 4 months and should be refrigerated.  You can measure a daily dose out in a smaller bottle and take it with you during your day if you cannot keep the entire bottle refrigerated.  Many people enjoy these extractions as the honey masks any of the herb flavors to give it a sweet taste. In addition honey is also known to have antifungal, antiseptic and antioxidant rich properties.

Tonics: Sometimes known as tinctures, these are herbs in combination whose properties are extracted out and preserved in a combination of alkaline water and alcohol. Their shelf life is indefinite and they do not require refrigeration. They should however be kept out of direct sunlight as well as extreme hot/cold temperatures. If you have never tried a tincture before, you may want to note that this type of herbal extraction tends to have a more bitter taste.  It is best to mix the dose in about 2 ounces of water to take.

What is the shelf-life of an Apothecary 11 Tonic?

The shelf-life of Apothecary 11’s tonics are five years for the alcohol based products. All syrups have a shelf-life of 3-5 months depending on how well they are stored.

How much alcohol is in extracts and how much alcohol am I actually consuming?

The amount of alcohol in liquid extracts can vary from 25% to 90% depending on the herbs being extracted and the content of alcohol and water-soluble constituents. The amount of alcohol you actually consume in a dose is fairly small. For example, the Nerve Aid Tonic includes 5 different herbs, each extracted out individually at their appropriate ratios. When you average them out, the alcohol content is 46%. This is roughly equal to 1/65th of a can of beer or 1/85th of an 8 ounce glass of wine. And if you mix the extract into 2 ounces of water to take, it changes the percentage of that mixture to .59% alcohol.
